The numbers are alarming: Worldwide, 1.9 billion adults and 42 million children are overweight or obese. In Europe alone, over 50 per cent of people are overweight. The trend is still on the rise.  

In order to care for people adequately in care homes or hospitals , special aids are needed for the severely overweight. In the care environment, for example, this requires more stable operating tables, wider beds, special lift systems and larger movement areas in the bathroom. BMI indicates overweight 

At what point are obese patients considered severely overweight?

The Body Mass Index (BMI) is suitable for checking whether you are overweight. It is calculated from the body weight and the body length and is expressed as kg/m2. From a value of 25, one speaks of overweight. For obesity there are additional severity levels from 1-3. These are based on the following BMI:

Extremely overweight people - usually with a BMI over 40 - are often severely restricted in their mobility and therefore need support in everyday life. This applies in particular to bathroom products.

Folding support rail for obese patients

The HEWI folding support rail for obese patients has a steel core and an additional wall and floor support. It supports the movement sequences in the bathroom with two grip levels. The surface is made of polyamide and is pleasant to the touch. Another big advantage is: The folding support handle is extremely space-saving if users fold it upwards and turn it towards the wall.

A shower bench supports obese patients in the bathroom. The HEWI shower bench not only has a sufficiently large seat, but also integrated grab rails. This makes sitting down and standing up more comfortable. Shower benches offer the advantage that they can be used flexibly. This means they can be placed not only in the shower, but also in front of the basin . Thanks to the steel core and additional reinforcement of the seat, the shower bench can bear loads of up to 300 kg. HEWI also offers folding shower seats for installation directly in the shower.

Grab rails for bariatric patients 

Grab rails are very important in the bathroom as they provide users with reliable support - in all areas of the washroom. The HEWI grab rail for bariatric patients is an ideal aid in the bathroom. It is optimally adapted to the hand and promotes effective power transmission. The distance to the wall is wide, creating an enlarged grip area. This makes it ideal for people with more weight to grip. There is a steel core inside the grab rail. The fixing rosettes are also made of steel, which makes the grab rail particularly robust;
